Lazy Latte Log: The Roost

TL;DR: ★★★★☆

Judging just by the iced coffee, The Roost has great brew. With just the right amount of sweetness and earthy notes, this cup of iced joe was incredibly satisfying and refreshing.

Iced coffee ($3) — don't mind the shadow of me snapping a pic...
(13th St. & Ave. B)

Plus, the place is pretty cool. By day, it's a coffee shop, but by night, in the back, the venue turns into a bar/lounge. I've definitely never heard of a coffee shop-turned bar by night, so I thought this was interesting.

The staff was also quite kind, though the cafe doesn't seem like the best place to bring your laptop and work. There aren't many seats, and most of them are stools right by the windows.

Quickie: Sunny and Annie's

Here's another no-brainer (and therefore super short post): Sunny and Annie's deli sandwiches. Oh. My. God. This "pho" sandwich is seriously the

Why, you ask? Well, here are the ingredients: roast beef, onions, bean sprouts, avocado, tomato, Sriracha-chili sauce on a roll. If that doesn't get you salivating already, maybe this will:

Perfection. Thats the only word I can think of for such fresh ingredients, flavors and spices that mesh amazingly well together.

Definitely don't judge this place by the ordinary bodega appearance. Though it may look shabby on the outside, Sunny and Annie's has, hands down, one of the best sandwiches I've had.

Lazy Latte Log: Cafe Grumpy

TL;DR: ★★★★☆

Not too shabby, not shabby at all. But also not ridiculously mind-blowing as many have claimed.

Americano ($3) and strawberry corn muffin ($3)
(20th St. & 8th Ave., among various locations)

While I did enjoy Cafe Grumpy's Americano — full-bodied, bold, all that good stuff — there was nothing about it that made me crave for more. And for me, that's a pretty strong indicator. (Side note, the muffin was delicious!)

Cappuccino ($4)

Same went for the cappuccino. Again, all the good stuff — smooth, rich, strong — but no wow factor. And given the hefty prices, you would think these drinks would have you aching for more. What's the deal here?

Not sure, but Grumpy is still pretty up there in my ranks of coffee shops. It just doesn't quite draw me in as much as others do.

Lazy Latte Log: Financier Patisserie

TL;DR: ★★★★☆

My God, it's been a while. But in my defense, I had all sorts of crazy things going on, including moving apartments, which is always a huge pain in the rear.

All excuses and whining aside, I'm back with yet another Lazy Latte Log — this time, featuring Financier Patisserie. This guy (the Greenwich Village location, among several) was on my radar for quite some time as it is pretty close to my old apartment, but funnily enough, I finally gave it a try after I moved about 120 blocks up. Either way, this French-themed cafe actually exceeded my expectations.

Iced Americano ($2.75) and mini financier
(Astor Pl. & Broadway)

The very bright florescent lighting and clean, minimalistic decor gave the cafe a Pret-like feel to it, which kind of made me expect a not-too-great-but-still-better-than-Starbucks cup of coffee. Much to my surprise though, the iced Americano I got was delicious — I know, don't judge a book by its cover, right? It was stronger and bolder than I thought it'd be, which I appreciated, but slightly more bitter than I would've liked.

Another thing I really appreciated about this place is that every drink purchase comes with a mini financier, a small, French version of the pound cake. It's their specialty, obviously, given the name of the cafe, so it was nice to be able to sample some of it.

Last thing to note: They also have great macarons, some of which they had out as samples! And their pastries looked beautiful — I'll definitely check some out next time.
